Morjim is so quite and pristine that Olive ridley turtles still lay their eggs in the soft sand. The best place to stay is the incongruously named Montego Bay Beach Village (0091 9822150847, www.montegobaygoa.com) which has Rajasthani tents with tiled bathrooms for 19 pounds a night.

There was a time when Baga and Candolim were shining, unspoiled beaches with intact sand dunes and just a couple of shacks perched at the high tide line. That was then, Morjim is now. Spend a day with the kids at this incongruously named litle resort, and you'll get a taste of the real Goa experience that first made the state's reputation a full generation ago. Its no frills but comfortable, rustic but unimpeachably clean. The food is realible and reasonaby priced, and the magnificent beach just beyond the hammocks has remained pristine enough for nesting Olive Ridley turtles. |
